Playing full blast you only hear a tiny bit of sound outside of the system (what others will hear)&#8212; When you play, however, you hear your trumpet as if there were no mute on at all through a stethoscope which plugs into the mute. You can control the airflow between the mute and the stethoscope, allowing for changes in the volume. The stethoscope isn&#8217;t the most comfortable thing to have in your ear but is quite bearable for a few hours at a time. It works very very well and adds only a slight bit of feedback or additional pressure to play. The mute does add a decent amount of weight to the trumpet though. I give it a pretty good 3 2\/3 out of 5. It&#8217;s called &#8220;Peacemaker&#8221; and it is sold in lots of instrument stores. I got it for $50 or so a few years ago but it&#8217;s selling now for ~$30.
