Si, E. — I mean "eh". Not "y" or A. Get it?!

After some training in Jersey City last night I wound up on the E train at its first (or last) stop, the WTC, on my way back into Queens. After a couple of stops this lady who must’ve been in her late 40s got on and asked me in Spanish if it was the E train and not the F.

Since she asked in Spanish the letters (phonetically) sounded like “eh” and “effe or F-A” respectively. I responded to her in Spanish saying “Yes, E. Not the F.” (Si, E. No la F.) When a nearby passenger heard me saying this she quickly shouted: “No, no! Not the A it’s the E. Eeeee!”

The person apparently didn’t know that E is pronounced as “eh” in Spanish and was trying to correct me but managed to confuse the hell out of the lady who then proceeded to ask me again, this time with much more confusion and worry in her voice, whether or not she was on the [E] correct train. That went on for a good 3-5 minutes as I stumbled in Spanish trying to communicate with the Lady all while trying to explain to the other person that I was indeed saying it was the E train, but in Spanish.
