Its inserted into the bell like a regular mute but this literal mute actually suppresses a majority of the sound coming out of the trumpet. Playing full blast you only hear a tiny bit of sound outside of the system (what others will hear)— When you play, however, you hear your trumpet as if there were no mute on at all through a stethoscope which plugs into the mute. You can control the airflow between the mute and the stethoscope, allowing for changes in the volume. The stethoscope isn’t the most comfortable thing to have in your ear but is quite bearable for a few hours at a time. It works very very well and adds only a slight bit of feedback or additional pressure to play. The mute does add a decent amount of weight to the trumpet though. I give it a pretty good 3 2/3 out of 5. It’s called “Peacemaker” and it is sold in lots of instrument stores. I got it for $50 or so a few years ago but it’s selling now for ~$30. Here is a pic of the Peacemaker in action with my Bach.
