Not saying "Ma"

Austen says "Da" all the time. She also tries to say "Cat" when she sees one of the kitties, "Clap" when she’s clapping, and even "Duck" when Mommy reads her a book on ducks -- as well as many other consonant/vowel combos with no meaning in English. However, she doesn't say "Ma." Mommy thinks this is because people around her don't say "Ma" with the same enthusiasm with which they say "Da." These people shall remain nameless.

On a totally unrelated topic, yesterday Davinder's parents suggested that they drive Austen to the store with her sitting on Mrs. Rodey's lap. Mommy and Daddy had to try to convince them that there are laws requiring the use of car seats. Mommy added, “Regardless of the law, it’s not safe.”

Visit to the pediatrician -- Dr. Rosenblum

Weight: 16lbs 15ounces
Height: 2'3"
Head Circumference: 17.5 inches

When Mommy told the doctor about Austen's developmental milestones, including her strong interest in standing and cruising, he said, "What's her rush?" Maybe Austen needs a more ambitious pediatrician.

Austen finally received her six month shots, after several delays due to illness and such, and is now up to date with all immunizations. She won't get shots again until her nine month appointment.

Austen now eats spinach, peas, apples, bananas, sweet potatoes, carrots, pears, rice cereal, oatmeal cereal, and sweet potato veggie puffs (which she feeds herself). Mommy and Daddy want to start proteins like beans and chicken soon.

Trying to say "clap"

Today, Austen said something that sounded like "Caaa" when clapping. We think she was attempting to say "clap." After all, that's what everyone else says when she's clapping. "Clap, clap, clap!" And clapping is currently her favorite activity. Whenever she's happy, she claps.

Austen recognizes her name very well at this point. She almost always turns her head in the direction of the person calling it.

Austen understands the word 'milk' and starts making hurry-up grunts if she hears it when she's hungry.

There are times when Austen copies Mommy and waves "Hi!" accompanied by a "hhhah" sound.

Yippie! Hooray!

Austen slept through the night for the first time. 8pm to around 7am. Thanks, Grandma Rodey, for playing with her and giving her a bath before bedtime.

The only trouble is that Austen now gets up and crawls around her crib, then pulls herself to standing. When she gets sleepy, she does a nose dive and drifts off to sleep in strange bent-over positions. Sometimes Mommy and Daddy sneak in while she's asleep to adjust her onto her side. Austen sleeps in a sleep sack with no blanket and no stuffed toys in her crib because of her tendency to doze off on her stomach now.

Jane Austen Playdate

Austen's infant friends and their mommies joined her for a Jane-Austen-inspired tea party. Mommy got out the fine china and bought some scones and Devonshire cream.

In attendance were Miss Eileen and her daughter, Miss Mia ("The Birthday Girl"); Miss Kelly and her daughter, Miss Riley; Miss Nancy and her son, Mr. Connor; Miss Hema and her daughter, Miss Nithya; Miss Heidi and her son, Mr. Dean; and Miss Reshmi and her son, Mr. Ayush. Mommy's not sure why she's insisting on using 'Miss' so many times; it must be a Jane Austen thing.

Climbing

Daddy and Mommy took Austen to Gymboree and she impressed Daddy by climbing one step up a ladder.

First Tooth

Austen uses crawling not as an end in itself but as a means to get to places where she can pull herself up to standing. Her primary interest is standing.

Austen's first tooth broke through last night. The front right.

When Austen wakes up in her crib, she turns over and starts crawling around. Often her arm or leg falls through the railing.

Easter in Stamford

Austen had a gay old time seeing her relatives and crawling for Easter eggs.

With Daddy:

With her rambunctious three-and-a-half-year-old cousin, Emma:

With her three cousins, Erin, Emma and Morgan:

"Why did Mommy put this big hat on me?"

"Keep away from my Easter eggs!"

(Note to Austen: You weren't actually possessive of your Easter Eggs; Mommy's teasing. You're actually grunting in this photo, which you did everyday at this age. We think you enjoyed the sensation of making throaty grunting sounds.)

Mommy's Yellow Sweater

Two photos. One of Mommy, when she was little, wearing a yellow sweater made by Nana (Emma Lloyd's mom) and sitting next to her brother Mark. The other of Austen wearing the same ultra-soft sweater while visiting Mark's house.

Erin's Baptism - Staying with Heather and Zack

Mommy, Daddy and Austen were treated like royalty when they stayed at Heather and Zack's home for the Easter weekend, which included Erin's Baptism. They feasted on fish, vegetable quiche, Bloody Marys and black jelly beans.

Austen did well in the car. Thanks to hours of preparation and packing by Mommy and Daddy.

Austen ate Aunt Heather's bike while she wasn't looking.

Austen wakes up with laughing and clapping

Notice her first words, spoken as the door opens: "Yankee Doodle Dandy"

Crawling = Danger

-Opens the door to her toy house and hits herself in the face. Here she is successfully crawling through her toy house:

-Sits on the stoop of her toy house, and then falls backward:

-Pulls on string tie attached to her toy basket. It's way longer than 6 inches. Babyproofing must commence immediately!

-Crawls over and whacks Nietzsche. If you know Nietzsche, you know that's risky.

-Tries to stand up while leaning on the handle of a canvas basket. Crash!

-Crawls off the edge of the futon in the play room and is caught by Mommy. Apparently she doesn't look down while crawling.

Sleeps through the night ... kinda

Austen went to bed around 8pm and slept until around 7am without a feeding. She did, however, wake once and require some soothing. Mommy and Daddy are feeling uncharacteristically superstitious and thus will not be getting excited about this turn of events ... yet.

Look Who's Crawling

One day after her 7-month birthday, Austen crawled across a blanket on the front lawn. About 5 feet total. Amazingly, Mommy caught it on video:

[Add video, Rin]

Austen doesn't do the army crawl -- she's opposed to the military-industrial complex -- but rather, she crawls on all fours. Pushing with her feet, she rears up, then with her weaker arms, cautiously plods forward, right hand, then left hand.

Seven Month Update: All the World's a Toy

Austen is fascinated by everything within reach of her eyes, ears or hands. She grabs and watches and listens. New things are best. Old things get boring – except for kitties. Change is good. Staying home with Mommy all day causes fussies: “That’s too much fussies,” exclaims Mommy. When one talks to Austen using silly voices or plays peek-a-boo, she laughs and laughs and laughs, even outdoing Daddy’s capacity for mirth.

While Austen immediately warms up to babies she meets, it sometimes takes her a few minutes to feel comfortable around strange adults. Eventually, she turns on her “big smile.”

Austen is now a crib dweller in the evening hours – even during some naps. Mommy is so happy to have some privacy in the master bedroom. However, Daddy often camps out in the playroom to tend to Austen during her night wakings. Although much improved, Austen is not sleeping through the night but hopefully this will change before next month’s update.

At the end of month seven, Austen is getting around a bit. Mommy plops her on the floor in one location and returns to find her having twisted and rolled and climbed five feet away. She can go from sitting to flat on her stomach, then roll onto her back. Once on her back, she reverses the process: rolls into crawling position, and then backs herself into a sitting position. This helps a lot considering she would previously start crying after getting stranded on her back, her least favorite position. (She cries while getting diaper changes until Mommy or Daddy sit her up.)

Other physical feats: Standing while holding onto her Leap Frog Table or a person. Pulling herself up to standing while in her crib, or using the Bumbo chair. Squirming out of her Bumbo chair. Stretching and grabbing the fish dangling from the mobile on her swing. Rolling to the edge of the bed in the guest room and scaring Mommy. At the beginning of month seven, her big achievement was the ability to move from sitting position to face-down crawling position. At the end of month seven, this is commonplace and Austen is an experienced sitter, rarely tipping over.

Austen usually sounds like she’s possessed with all the grunting and guttural sounds: “Rar rar rar…Rah rah rah …Aw wah…Mawah.” Mommy and Daddy perform regular exorcisms. In the mornings and sometimes in the evening as she’s about to fall asleep, she does a round of “da da da.” She’s mastered clapping, so much so that Daddy has caught her clapping in the middle of the night while she’s barely awake. Austen entertains people at the grocery store with her smiling and clapping: a nice palm-to-palm slap.

Austen’s small motor skills are advanced for her age. Walking down the hall, Austen reached for the double light switch, so Mommy paused to let her touch it. In a matter of seconds, Austen turned both lights on. When first introduced to a veggie puff (her first experience with an object smaller than the diameter of a toilet paper roll), Austen pinched it using her thumb and pointer finger. Mommy and Daddy believe her skills are a result of constant exploration and manipulation of an assortment of toys, rattles and everyday objects.

Although Austen has no teeth, she’s still teething: drooling and chewing on things. She eats formula, milk, rice cereal, carrots, bananas, apples and sweet potatoes.

The Peg Perrego infant car seat (Primo Viaggio) has been retired because Austen outgrew the height limit. She’s switched to a Britax Marathon car seat (reversible, up to 65 lbs). She still snoozes in her car seat but, unlike with her infant travel system, it’s not possible to transfer her from car to stroller without waking her.

New Nicknames

Munchkin
Booger
Squeaky
Silly Girl
The Baby (as in "You're the BAAAABY!")

Big Eater

Austen eats solids about three times a day. She usually has rice cereal mixed with carrot, apple, banana or sweet potato. Sometimes she even eats straight from the jar. Her record is one and a half small jars. She seems to enjoy all the foods Mommy and Daddy have introduced to her.

She also has numerous bottles of milk and formula each day.

Austen started taking swim classes at the Metuchen YMCA. She's categorized as a 'shrimp.' Here she is in her bathing suit:

Drastic Measures

Austen is happy, healthy, active and developmentally advanced. Her one issue: sleep … in particular, self-soothing and falling asleep on her own.

After Austen got up 8 times in one night (eating a total of 20 ounces during 6 of those wakings), Mommy and Daddy decided they must take drastic measures.

1) Austen has moved out of her bassinet in Mommy and Daddy's room and into the crib in her room.

2) Her bedtime is set at 8:30 instead of 10pm.

3) After her goodnight ritual (eating, bathing, singing) Austen must stay in her bed until 1am when she's picked up for her ONE AND ONLY nighttime feeding.

4) Austen is allowed to cry for 5 minutes, after which Mommy or Daddy go in to soothe her with back pats and lullabies.

Thus far, Austen is thriving on this new system. She's happy and active during daytime hours. It's been a little difficult for Mommy and Daddy to listen to strong-lunged Austen’s five-minute crying sessions – so far she’s up to three in a row -- but otherwise Mommy and Daddy are feeling more rested. Austen is still waking up every few hours but is easily soothed back to sleep, and hopefully she will eventually cut down on these waking since she's not being lulled to sleep with milk.

Yes, we know what this looks like and we're not proud.

The bunny suit just sorta came together by accident. The ears had been purchased for Easter. The shirt is from Abby West. The bunny socks are a shower gift from Janet Wettig.
