At the Nutcracker with Emma and Zack

Dada and Gage drove us and then hung out at Barnes and Noble. Mommy
and Erin were camera shy. Heather was comforting Prince Eric. Everyone
loved the show.

What's wrong with this picture?

She loves movies.

In current rotation are Frosty The Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nosed
Reindeer, The Little Mermaid, and NYCB The Nutcracker. We went to see
The Princess and the Frog at a theatre. Mommy loved it.

Moving to the West Coast

It was kinda a sad day. We had to say goodbye to some of the first
friends she and I made in Metuchen. She sure did come up with a
unique way of doing so. Maybe I could learn a thing or two from her ...

I see some Grandma Judi in there

Look at that face.

My list of funny things that happened at the Nutcracker:

Eric: Within five minutes of arrival Prince Eric was complaining about the kids acting like kids. Noisy little minions!

Heather: Vegetarian spent the whole evening with a dead animal (aka fur) wrapped around her head.

Emma: Insisted the Arabian dancer was from China.

Austen: Insisted the Arabian dancer was missing part of her dress.

Zack: Twenty-something guy played with kids better than any parent there.

Lucinda: Waited in line for photo with ballerina three times but still didn't manage to get a shot of all three girls.

"I'm feeling shy."

Austen sometimes struggles with feeling caution and uncomfortable when she first enters a situation. Even when at a party at a friend's house, you see her standing around quietly for the first ten minutes before she starts partying like her wild self.

Her tendency to need a warmup period and to start slow causes her to cling to the people she's familiar with. She gravitates towards the friends she's known since she was 6 months old. Her preschool teacher insists that she is friendly with all the kids, but Mommy worries when she seems flustered upon first entering the crowded classroom. She always looks for Jack, who's her oldest friend in the class.

Imagination and Fiction

Austen has an amazing ability to recall storylines and retell them (albeit leaving things out). She is so imaginative, constantly talking to imaginary people, sings made-up songs, talking in her own silly language, laughing at noises and pranks. Our favorite inside joke: "How do you spell TV?" The creative side of her keeps blossoming.

Often fantasy and reality are blurred. At a birthday party she got incredibly upset when a magician pretended to cut Gage in half with large plastic scissors. She cried and yelled at him about "hurting her baby." The guests were thoroughly amused but Austen took it all very seriously.
